Microsoft Founder, NFL Owner, Paul Allen speaks out on Mormons~

Paul Allen is the owner of the Seattle Seahawks, the ones who played
the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Super Bowl a few years ago. He is also
the owner of the Portland Trail Blazers NBA basketball team and is
co-partner with Bill Gates in Microsoft. He wrote this editorial in the
Santa Clarita, California newspaper:

I have heard and seen enough! I have lived in the West all my life. I
have worked around them. They have worked for me and I for them. When I
was young, I dated their daughters. When I got married they came to my
wedding. Now that I have daughters of my own, some of their boys have
dated my daughters. I would be
privileged if one of them were to be my son-in-law.

I'm talking about the Mormons.

They are some of the most honest, hardworking people I have ever known.
They are spiritual, probably more than most other so-called religious
people I have encountered. They study the Bible and teach from it as
much as any Christian church ever has. They serve their religion
without pay in every conceivable capacity. Not one of their leaders,
teachers, counselors, Bishops or music directors receive one dime for
the hours of labour they put in.

The Mormons have a non-paid ministry - a fact that is not generally
known. I have heard many times from the pulpits of others how evil and
non-Christian they are and that they will not go to heaven. I decided
recently to attend one of their services near my home to see for
myself.

What a surprise!

What I heard and saw was just the opposite from what the religious
ministers of the day were telling me. I found a very simple service
with no fanfare. I found a people with a great sense of humour and a
well-balanced spiritual side. There was no loud music. Just a simple
service, with the members themselves giving the several short sermons.

They urge their youth to be morally clean and live a good life. They
teach the gospel of Christ, as they understand it. The name of their
church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. Does that
sound like a non-Christian church to you? I asked them many questions
about what they teach and why. I got answers that in most cases were
from the New Testament. Their ideas and doctrines did not seem too far
fetched for my understanding. When I read their "Book of Mormon" I was
also very surprised to find just the opposite from what I had been told
I would find.

Then I went to another church's pastor to ask him some of the same
questions about doctrine. To my surprise, when he found out that I was
in some way investigating the Mormons, he became hostile. He referred
to them as a non-Christian cult. I received what sounded to me like
evil propaganda against those people. He stated bluntly that they were
not Christian and that they did not fit into the Christian mold. He
also told me that they don't really believe the Bible. He gave me a
pile of anti-Mormon literature. He began to rant that the Mormons were
not telling me the truth about what they stand for. He didn't want to
hear anything good about them. At first I was surprised and then again,
I wasn't. I began to wonder.

I have never known of a cult that supports the Boy Scouts of America.
According to the Boy Scouts, over a third of all the Boy Scout troops
in the United States are Mormon.

What cult do you know of that has a welfare system second to none in
this country? They have farms, canneries and cattle ranches to help
take care of the unfortunate ones who might be down and out and in need
of a little help. The Mormon Church has donated millions to welfare
causes around the world without a word of credit. They have donated
thousands to help rebuild Baptist churches that were burned a few years
ago. They have donated tons of medical supplies to countries ravaged by
earthquakes.

You never see them on TV begging for money.. What cult do you know that
instills in its members to obey the law, pay their taxes, serve in the
military if asked and be a good Christian by living high moral
standards? Did you know that hundreds of thousands of Mormon youth get
up before high school starts in the morning to attend a religious
training class? They have basketball and softball leagues and
supervised youth dances every month.

They are recruited by the FBI, the State Department and every police
department in the country, because they are Trustworthy. They are
taught not to drink nor take
drugs. They are in the Secret Service - those who protect the
President. They serve in high leadership positions from both parties in
Congress and in the US Senate, and have been governors of several
states other than Utah. They serve with distinction and honour.

If you have Mormons living near, you will probably find them to be your
best friends and neighbours. They are Christians who try to live what
they preach. They are not perfect and they are the first to admit this.
I have known some of them who could not live their religion, just like
many of us. The rhetoric which is spread around against them is nothing
more than evil propaganda founded in untruths. (Others) had
successfully demonized them to the point that the general public has no
idea what they actually believe and teach.. If you really want to know
the truth, go see for yourself. You also will be surprised.

When I first moved here some 25 years ago there were five Mormon wards
in Santa Clarita, Calif. Now there are 15. They must be doing something
right.

Back at work after two weeks out~~ whew................is this really what I used to do? (smile)

Wishing all of my wonderful children and grandchildren Happy New Year and a very grateful "thank you" for their help recovering after surgery!!

New Year's resolution, Jenny inspired me to get up and read my scriptures early in the morning......instead of sleepily at night. I started this morning and what a difference in the gratitude I feel for the Savior of the World and all he has blessed me with!!! I recommend it to anyone looking to start their New Year each morning in a new way!!

Can we ever fully appreciate the power of prayer

There has been a lot of answered prayers in my ward lately, with past members coming back into activity and illness being overcome. Prayer has also been evident in my mother's health. She has had two really good days this past weekend of clear thinking and ability to remember. I'm so grateful we have somewhere to go to and someone we know will hear our prayers. I remember hearing somewhere that He may answer yes, or no, or not at this time ~ But it is a good feeling to know He cares and we can put our trust in His will and timing.

A Birthday Piano

I'm sure I have the most amazing family!! We all went to Temple Square Saturday evening, watched Katelyn play her little violin with many other young violinists and listened to their beautiful Christmas music at the JSMB.  We then gathered in front of the gorgeous huge Christmas Tree in the lobby and took some fun family pictures. I'm so appreciative of Kelly taking video of all of us! We bundled up and walked over to the Lion House for a delicious dinner and afterwards went across Temple Square through the beautiful lights up the ramp to the Christus. The little kids' eyes never seem to tire of seeing the Savior standing there in that beautiful spot with his arms outstretched. Then of course Maegen became lost, at least lost to us, she I'm sure was not aware of any problems, she was going up and down the escalator having the time of her life. Mason & Jake found her but she promptly ran away again. At last after contacting Security and everyone looking for her, she was found and we all came back to my house. I walked in and saw a piano sitting there which my three son-in-laws had somehow muscled into my home!!

I was so surprised and tears just rushed out.  I had not had a piano in my home for nearly 20 years!!! Yippee............Austin had found this lovely piano at an auction and I just love it! Cherlyn made me a beautiful black silk wreath with music flowers on it and it looks so pretty over the piano!!

Thank you Family!!! You really surprised me and I am so happy to have this opportunity to sit down and play music again!!   I love you all so very very very much!

When a friend brought these to work, I was polite and said oh that's nice.

but when I tried them, they are delicious, and the syrup is not too sweet

try'em if you love pumpkin things like I do!!

Pumpkin Pancakes

2 C Bisquick

2 tbs packed brown sugar

2 tsp ground cinnamon

1 can evaporated milk

½ cup pumpkin pie mix

2 tbsp vegetable oil

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

In a large bowl, combine Bisquick and sugar. Mix together. Add evaporated milk, pumpkin, oil, eggs and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Pour onto heated and lightly greased griddle. Cook until top surface in bubbly and edges are dry. Turn, cook until golden brown. Especially good served with homemade apple syrup.

Apple Syrup for Pancakes

1 c sugar

2 tbsp cornstarch

¼ tsp cinnamon

¼ tsp nutmeg

2 c apple juice

2 tbsp lemon juice

¼ c butter or margarine

Mix dry ingredients, add juices and bring to a boil. Then add the butter. Serve hot over pancakes, waffles or French Toast.

NOTE:

In place of the cinnamon and nutmeg, ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice works well.

In my life-dream.........as an 8 yr old, a 15 yr old, a 20 yr old, a 30 yr old................working 40+ hrs a week outside my home was not in the plan. I wanted to be a wife with a ring, a mom, a homemaker~~~with attention to raising responsible, creative, loving and happy kids to go out and make their way in the world.  I wanted to attend the ballet, theatre, the arts and yes, going to good movies to eat popcorn and drink diet cokes with my sweetheart! I wanted to learn to cook great Chinese food in a wok and bake the perfect chocolate chip cookie! I wanted to go to Hawaii, Jerusalem, Nauvoo and Palmyra and sit in the Sacred Grove.

Now 60 yrs later~~isn't life just a bowl of cherries (with some pits thrown in) but most of all quite delicious! I buy frozen chocolate chip dough and keep in my freezer so I can bake and enjoy the smell with grand kids when they come over.  If I want the best Chinese food in the world........that is at the Mandarin in Bountiful, Utah! My diamond ring is now a CTR ring and I like looking at it. I go to plays occasionally, enjoy granddaughter's dancing and rent old movies like The Hot Rock and Bus Stop and laugh out loud as I enjoy it from my recliner! I cheer and scream for grandchildren playing soccer, football, baseball, basketball. No one can split my sides with laughter like my adult children and their spouses~They all have been blessed with amazing senses of humor! I've been to Nauvoo and tell my little cub scouts about the mighty Mississippi and how big it is and watch their imaginations as we talk of Emma Smith walking over the frozen river.   I've saved for two years and my Israel account looks promising~~......Life is pretty good at taking you down an unusual path but I am enjoying the journey!

Labor Day included the labor of FLU!!! yucky..........Friday after work, the chills, okay lay on a heating pad and watch a movie, well that turned into many movies through the night and into saturday - which turned into every fun thing that comes with the stomach flu!

Later on I found out Kel & Stacey were sharing the same moments ( smile )

Anyway, today is the day after Labor Day and it's great to be alive and feeling sooooooo much better!!!

Speaking in Church.....

Yesterday, I had a very interesting experience speaking in sacrament meeting. The lady that spoke before me wasn't there when the meeting started and I was getting pretty nervous about taking more than my allotted 15 minutes!!!~~~She arrived with her husband and adorable golden curled haired 2 year old son. They sat on the front row and when she came up to talk, so did her son. He rode the railing at the pulpit, threw his shoes over the side, smiled, made faces, ran around in front of the bishopric - needless to say it was amazing to see that the father didn't ever offer to take him out. The bishop leaned forward at one point to catch him, thinking he was going to fall, a counselor had to sit at the piano because he kept opening up the piano and playing it. I didn't know this family and found out after the meeting what was going on, but needless to say the spirit was not there...............and I was getting a little nervous that they were going to let him be my companion when I got up to speak as well.!!

When she finished, the choir sang and she and her husband still did not try to reign him. He kept coming up the stairs and running around the pulpit area. I was getting quite interested in the reaction of the ward members. From my vantage point I could see some getting a kick out of it, mainly the youth and some getting quite red-faced............ready to stand up and tell them "get your kid!".

When it was my turn to speak the father again picked up the little boy and they moved to the back of the chapel, where he proceeded to act up and eventually the mother took him out. I completed my talk and felt a peaceful feeling that finally the spirit was there in our meeting. When the meeting ended the Bishop came up to me and apologized saying, "Sister Jewkes, I'm so sorry. This family has just become active again and are unaware obviously of how to help their little son~they told us recently on a home visit that "they do not believe in telling their son no.".......it all came together

.....spare the rod and spoil the child?....................Maybe just a little bit!!!

A "FIND" from 1952

One of my favorite songs has always been "When He Comes Again" -I learned it in Primary and have sung it all my life. But always just two verses, well my friend's mother passed away and they found a 1952 copy of this song while going through her papers. The sheet music has a verse 3 in it and it is beautiful!!

so..........sing along and when you get to the 3rd verse, sing it then look up the scripture:

I love to watch my grandchildren do their thing by attending football, baseball, soccer games, swim meets, dance recitals, violin recitals, choir concerts ~ it is so much fun to watch another generation discover new talents, improve their skills and have fun doing it! ~ The unconditional perspective of being a grandparents is amazing and gratifying. I see only my posterity on the field or the stage, looking for their smile or laugh or approval of what just went down~~

Last night I took Emma & Katelyn to see the production 7 Brides for 7 Brothers in Centerville....they were enthralled with the production, Katelyn squealed as the stage curtain rose up, they both knew a lot of the songs (from the movie) that were performed. It was a long production and yet these little girls' eyes never left the stage. Afterwards, I introduced them to the lead, Danny Inkley who I taught along side of my oldest son, Troy in primary. He lived just up the street and now has honed his talents with an amazing voice! We saw him later that night at In & Out with his own kids - Katelyn remarked as we were walking to the car, "you know Grandma, they look different up close!"................yep, they do, Emma!

I like being a grandmother. I think my main task in this role which began about 14 years ago is to make memories that my grandchildren will remember ~ Even sending phone messages to tell them about the "Harvest Moon"! (did ya enjoy that one, Mason?)

It's almost midnight and 31 years ago Jennifer Jewkes Horton was just an hour and half away from being born!.....at 1:17 AM on 8/8/80!

She was an easy and fun baby/toddler and enjoyed by her brother and two sisters.

She's the pied-piper to kids and grown up kids alike! Parties go up a "notch" in noise and every other way when she arrives~

We love you sooooooooo Jen - many, many, many happy returns of this day!

Ok, I love salads! .... But not the dry, tasteless pale iceberg lettuce that some buffets offer, with a yellow film over the dressing and garbanzo beans that look like they came from your grandmother's food storage~~that is not my idea of a good salad~

Cutler's Cookies, our local hometown sandwich/soup/salad deli now makes a spinach salad with strawberries, mandarin oranges, slivered almond and grated parmesan cheese thrown in. These ingredients are upon a bed of fresh spinach leaves! AND if that were not enough, it comes with a delicious poppy-seed dressing!

Watched Katelyn "fiddle" to open an early morning patriotic program in Layton on Independence Day. She was the cutest one with a violin up on stage, all decked out in red, white and blue. The speaker was short but powerful. I pray for our Republic............this the greatest nation on the face of the earth, but taken for granted more often than not.

From there, we went to Kaysville to watch the parade which Katelyn also was in ( her dance group ).....it was wonderful to see how Korean War and Vietnam vets were honored and applauded for as they went by. The weather was made to order for me...............overcast, cool breeze, absolutely perfect to watch a parade in!!!

I love to watch little grandchildren instinctively put their hand over their heart as the pledge of allegiance is said and our Nation's Flag goes by. Happy Birthday USA - May God Bless This Nation and help us remember what is offered to us as citizens of the United States of America.

Great friend and co-worker, Steve T. is leaving for a new position. I've worked with him for 5+ years. He is Jill's age and in fact when to school with Jill at Bountiful High. I think of him almost like one of my kids. He has been so much fun to work with, he has a great sense of humor and such a good young man, husband to his sweet Heidi and dad to Kaitlyn, Michael and Logan. When either one of us has had to vent, we knew the other would listen~likewise when something really hysterical happened in the office-I could count on Steve to GET IT!! and laugh with me~!

I wish him well, he will get to be outside more as he will be working on the Church's rec-camps in the northern Utah area and he has a smile on his face for that and also a spring in his step! Ties will be the exception not the rule from here on out! ~~~ and even though I will miss him so much the no tie thing really brings a "Steve grin"!

Katelyn had her recital last Saturday - her cousin and littlest sister really got into the "Snow Queen" ballet!!

on Monday, Brooke danced six dances at the Browning Center on the Weber State Campus - even though we had a fire alarm scare and had to wait in rainy weather for the " all clear" to begin the recital, it was worth it. Brooke had injured her wrist in dress rehearsal, but no one could tell, she was great!

Many games and practices have been cancelled due to our "Seattle like weather" ..............hoping for summer to begin soon!

One of my old Laurel's from YW is preparing to enter the MTC in July!!! She will be serving at Winter's Quarters, Nebraska Omaha mission-----------I just may have to take a historical trip out there next year for a hug. This young woman is exceptional! She played soccer, Lacrosse and cross country during her high school. She was beautiful, hardly ever wore much makeup, that athletic glow always shown through!

She would welcome the little Beehives in with so much love and tenderness~She came to camp as an assistant for two years after she graduated and did High Adventure.  She introduced me to Brian Regan's humor~~thanks for that!!!

Her insights into the scriptures during lessons was profound for someone so young.   She has been attending Utah State the last three years and anyone that can brave winters there comes from tough stock!

She is naturally a little shy but always speaks up if asked something about the gospel or her standards. her Testimony was always, "that it's just so much easier to obey~~yet she never judged others harshly" - just a smart, pretty, confidant young woman who loves the Lord.  I was the Teacher but learned so much from her and am so proud to call her friend. Good Luck Cindy on your mission~you will be awesome!

I recently saw "Jane Eyre" - yes, probably a "chick-flick" but one with class!

I also saw on referral from Amy, "Soul Surfer" and loved it!!! A great
film of inspiration and perseverance!

One of my favorite lines is from "Hope Floats".....Beginnings are usually scary, endings are mostly sad
but the middle is what makes it all worth living!... enjoy where you are, sometimes you just need to give Hope a chance to float up!~~

Entertainment that encourages, lifts, inspires, brings out our compassion or gives us tears from laughing is the best kind of respite in our busy lives! It takes a lot of courage to play an instrument at five years old in front of an audience. But we all appreciated her talent and she sparkled with a big smile when she was done~ (whew).....Mom was smiling a lot too at the conclusion!

Amy's recuperating from surgery, Jenny has "Shingles" - yes! ... and ... & Stacey, Violet & Pearl are recovering from that famous friend to all of us, the 24 hr FLU!!!

Goodby February, we want some nice, spring weather~~I feel like a slug because in the snow and slush and February doldrums I can't well I guess that is more like I don't get out and walk like I should. I have a friend at work that has horrible foot problems and can't walk, so I feel especially guilty not using the great orthotics I swear by and MOVE~~~is it too late for a March 2011 new year resolution?.....walking is wonderful! and with an IPOD you can walk to rhythm or listen to talks, it's pretty amazing what we enjoy today~~

Wishing all an end of winter illnesses and better health ahead~ I just read where ZINC is great for almost anything that gets you down~

what a surprise last Friday to hear from Cherlyn~ she and the kids came through Salt Lake with her folks and we had a great 24 hours visit. In memory of Troy ( who was doing a golf show in Spokane ) we hit "LA" and "in & out" just to make him jealous!!! ( smile )

Michael is a hoot and the source of entertainment and Kaylee and TJ have gotten soooooooo tall, all my grandkids will pass me up shortly! Stacey got some great action shots and we had so much visiting with them while they were here!

For the last week or so a dire cancer diagnosis has been looming for my niece, Lindsay. She is my sister Cheryl's firstborn and a 31 year old wife and mother.  Our family united our prayers and faith on her behalf.  We all fasted last Sunday and mom flew out to California to be with Cheryl and Lindsay.   My wonderful father and Judy drove to Sacramento from Oregon. Dad and Leon Felt, Nola's husband and dear friend gave powerful priesthood blessings to Lindsay and to her mom, who was beside herself at the thought of losing her daughter.  We waited for a specialist who was flying in to see her, praying and pleading that our faith would be answered. Dad called and told me that all we could do now is leave it in the Lord's hands.  I kept thinking of hands, the Savior's hand touched a blind man and his eyes became whole, a suffering woman with a disease over twelve years touched the hem of his robe with her hand and was healed.  I knew that His power and mercy could be manifest in Lindsay, but also that He knew the end from the beginning and we had to trust Him.     After a long exam and conference with the specialist yesterday, the cancer grade was downgraded and a much more favorable outcome and diagnosis was given Lindsay.    On the phone talking with Cheryl we both acknowledged that exercising faith in the Lord Jesus Christ from so many and the power of the priesthood had literally changed the grade of cancer.    Miracles do occur just as when the Master walked on the earth. His tender mercies are evident in so many ways in our lives.   We try as imperfectly as only we can to put our faith and desires into his capable hands. The blessing of renewed and increased faith and strength is often the result.    As I hung up the phone with my sister, I was overcome with tears of humble gratitude for His goodness, His care, and His love for each one of us.

My firstborn had some surgery today. I know she is hurting. When I got her three oldest off to school this morning, there was a note on the fridge from her telling them that "Mom loves you!"   even though she wasn't there, Emma wrote back on the note...."We love you too, Mom!"     We'll take good care of you Amy, you'll feel better in a few weeks~~~We all love you and pray for your recovery.

I team-teach in Primary with Sister Fuller, a neat neat lady in her 70's that returned a year ago from a Boston, Massachusetts mission.  Zelda and I love our little 8-10 yrs olds and we have enjoyed teaching them last year about Old Testament Prophets and this year about the Savior's life. I just got word that she passed away quite unexpectedly - She will be very much missed by our Primary class - I had just talked to her a couple of days ago and she said she thought she was feeling better......still quite a shock that her lovely smiling face won't be there with our class singing those beautiful Primary songs.

Got to spend the weekend with the King kiddies---Devin drew me a heart and a BEAUTIFUL VALENTINE note - he has the sweetest heart beating inside that little first grader!

I went bowling with Devin & Derek while Britney went to see "Justin Beber"'s movie with her friend Bailey and Bailey's mom. Devin bowled 108, Derek 77 and grandma pulled up with a 75 ~ I don't think the Bowling circuit is nervous at all! But we had so much fun~

Sunday we all went to hear the Horton family speak at sacrament meeting. They did an amazing job talking on family values and raising children with faith to help them during these difficult times. I was so proud of each of them. They bore pure testimony that the only way we can give our children the power and faith they will need as they face life's challenges is through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Big Super Bowl party last night at Horton's - lots of fun, family and FOOD! Jenny had made everything - and I mean everything, little smokies, meatball subs, deli meats, chips, pasta salad --then along came Stacey's choc-mint fudge, choc chip cookies, apple/snicker salad, Amy's artichoke dip, and add to that cilantro/sausage, German chocolate cake and ice cream and yes, you have a Food-Fest! The kids had fun, the men cheered, we all got to visit and enjoy wonderful tasty dishes - Brookie wasn't feeling well, but she is such a sport and came out and laid down to be with us!!! We love you Brooke, hope today is better!

We missed Jason who was getting his "Fall hunting schedules ironed out" .... you missed some great dishes - but we sent home one of his favorites 7 layer dip!

I watched Maegan bowl tonight in preparing for the state finals.....I couldn't believe it! Maegan spot bowls~something my dad tried to teach me for years~~~~She's amazing! Katelyn was one of her partners and did a great job herself~

Let me tell you about Maegan Hope's technique.....
1) pick up custom made pink bowling ball with the smallest holes drilled into it you have ever seen
2) stand back and eye the shot
3) run toward the line and throw the bowling ball on the spot ( notice I didn't say roll it )
4) stand there and watch and will it to go straight toward the "sweet place"
5) SUCCESS - turn and accept the applause with her famous smile!

Sleep-Over?

The four Lindsey girls and Pearl came over for a New Year's sleepover at Gram's last Friday night. We had so much fun and did very little sleeping~~~(smile) - toenails were painted, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers/Singing In the Rain/Horton Gives A Who were all watched, popcorn was popped, root beer was drank, Hershey bars were devoured and even 3 large apples all cut up and peeled were munched on to the last piece!! But the highlight of the evening's festivities was Charades! These five little girls are incredible!!! We guessed all the princess movies, Disney and then went onto members of our families - let me tell you both the acting and the guessing were amazing!! We were all laughing so hard as we guessed who they were imitating~ Believe me parents and older siblings, these little girls are watching you! Around 1:30 AM Maegan, Kelsey and Kate were out, but Pearl and Emma's eyes were wide open. I turned out the lights and turned on a DVD of our primary kids singing primary songs - we listened twice through and then I heard the sweet sound of little girls finally succumbing to the Sand Man! If I hadn't been afraid a flash would have woke them all up, I would have taken a picture. The dreams of the innocent - so PRECIOUS!!!

We all met at King's home for refreshing Christmas punch, ham, potatoes, Austin's fruit, Amy's cheese-ball, Paul & Shelly's caramel corn, a new delicious hot dip & lots of chips, gingerbread cookies and of course the "namino's!" Jason & Jill had a real tree this year and it was beautiful & tall!! The kids listened to Grandma tell about the gifts the Savior has given us - we talked about a service project we were doing as a family and then the kids got to change into their new Christmas pj's! All that is except Katelyn, she prefers nighties! The cousins enjoyed each other, we got to laugh at Jen & Nicky on the "Ellen Show" when they were dancing in the audience on a trip in September~~Jill had taped it! So fun to get together! We missed the Blanchard Jewkes and Kel & his family in Long Beach but knew they were having a wonderful Christmas!

This has been a busy but fun week~Troy came into town for a flight to Florida last weekend - of course we made the usual LA & In&Out "double-double's" stops with siblings, neices and nephews~ Troy was joined by his little brother, Kelly for a couple of "LA" mexican dinners as well. He returned to SLC saturday night and Kel & Stacey and the girls came over, we had lots of laughing when those two Jewkes' brothers get together! Pearl really seems to like her Uncle Troy and gave him the best hug~ He is working on compelting his PGA class requirements held in Orlando and will return two more times this next year. He was homesick for his family and should be there by the time of this post -

While he was here he got to see his neice, Britney play soccer - now he realizes how good she is!

I had the fun opportunity to see two little granddaughters dance this week. Wednesday, Katelyn showed her ballet skills as a five year old and she is a natural! Saturday, Brooke had a Christmas recital and my goodness, Gram was bursting her buttons watching the beautiful talent she has worked so hard at all year.

Next week all kids and "kids at heart" like me will enjoy the celebration of Christmas. don't you just love when someone looks right into your eyes and wishes you a Merry Christmas? I do!

I hope everyone got a chance to hear President Uchtdorf's Christmas message last night.....

let's simplify and enjoy the treats, music and love of family at Christmas....we always say we will, but then start letting the hustle and bustle get to us!!! (I know I do!)

When I remember the sweetest Christmas's of my life either as a child or adult it was enjoying being around the people I love the most~~laughing, eating & hugging!!!

December 4th I entered my sixth decade of life! (this really can't be happening)......."smile"

I went to lunch with Jen & Cor and Amy & Mom at Robintino's - then we all went out to the Hale Theatre and met up with Kel & Stacey to see A Christmas Carol. The play was wonderful! Thank you Stacey for getting the tickets all together! wow - I love live theatre soooooooooooo much! Hale Theatre probably has one of the best set designers around - it was amazing! Afterwards we all went over to Amy's for cake and got some great pictures of families and grandkids with their 60 year old Gram~~Katelyn, Kelsey and Pearl helped Grandma open some lovely gifts and my favorite activity was hugging grandkids - I even got a big one from Derek.........I'm wearing him down!! ( smile ) Brooke got my waterworks going when she gave me a poem she had written - ah yes the writing talent is continuing on in the family!! It was a great day~ I'm so glad I've had sixty super stupendous sensational years and the blessings that go with it! Thank you fam for a wonderful birthday!!! We missed Troy & Cher and family but plan to get together with them this summer for sure - since it will be Kaylee's turn to be baptised!!!

Carl Bloch Exhibit at BYU

I will probably never see in person, Da Vinni's Mona Lisa or Monet's "water lilies" or even Michelangelo's ceiling at the Sistine Chapel in Rome, but I had an amazing opportunity to witness up close and personal Carl Bloch's altar paintings and sketches. The Museum of Art at BYU has the priceless opportunity of presenting these paintings produced in the 1800's~ They are magnificent! These all have been reproduced and seen on several of the LDS Church magazines, i.e. Ensign, New Era, etc over the years but the detail, from those small prints, believe me is missing.............when you actually see the brush strokes that produced these masterpieces, I was blown away. You stand back and see this wall sized painting of the Savior with a little brown-eyed child standing by his side. I thought to myself, they are real, that is an actual photograph......but then as you walk towards the painting and getting closer and closer, you see details in the eyes and hair and hands and skin that were made by paint!!! What a God-given talent Carl Bloch had and developed. He studied from age 15 to 25 with the Masters in Rome. I remember reading that Rembrandt had a unique talent for portraits and faces. Take the opportunity to see another master's work ---Carl Bloch born in Denmark paints faces as if they could almost speak to you. I'll never forget what I was privileged to see. I'm not an artist, my "Pictionary" attempts are always met with boisterous laughter....but you don't have to be an artist to appreciate the Touch of a Master's Hand.

Thanksgiving 2010

In a Thanksgiving Nutshell:
1) Kobe made his first banana cream pie all by himself!! He did a great job!
2) Kobe, Brooke and Grandma fixed some beautiful pumpkin pies the day before thanksgiving - it was a good thing we needed a sliver because although they looked beautiful, they were lacking sugar!!!! So we got to make them all over again.
3) Brooke helped me peel 10 pounds of potatoes - that's KP duty - she needs a medal!
4) Jill made Amy's famous squash - which tickled Violet because she was a few pounds heavier after her Thanksgiving dinner~~~ I'm sure Stacey has pictures to come.........she LOVED the squash!!
5) Stacey brought a southern favorite, jalapeno jelly/cream cheese - we had to watch Mason with each cracker to keep him from the "double dip"! DELICIOUS!
5) Cory picked up extra tables & chairs
6) Jen fixed the raspberry/pretzel jello - Brooke had 4 or 5 helpings!! ( smile ) she can do that, she's a dancer!!
7) Jenny & Brooke lovingly prepared 72 deviled eggs~~~there wasn't a single leftover......~
8) Jen had her house decorated for the holidays - so much fun to eat by a beautiful Christmas tree!
9) Grandma P. brought her sherry cake, a favorite among us wine-bibbers....and the always popular green bean casserole. Aunt Shelly brought coconut custard pie -
With the Cowboys playing and the aroma of wonderful food~none of us left hungry!! ( smile ) In fact after a movie date of all the mom's and dad's it was time for turkey sandwiches~ YUM~
Until next year the memory of hot mashed potatoes, aptly named stuffing, turkey, cranberry, rolls, pumpkin pie and whip cream~~ will remain just that..............a memory!

I did learn a secret about Derek.....he eats pumpkin pie just the way his Grandma J. does ~ (forks are for novices, right?)

NOW anyone for a salad with light dressing?

It doesn't seem possible that two years ago Michael Roger Jewkes was born in Spokane, Washington! I fell in love with him at first sight - when I flew up there to help take care of him and his brother and sister while his sweet mom had to have some emergency surgery~He was beautiful then and at two is still GORGEOUS!!!

Sorry Michael, it's a grandma thing..............but you are such a cutie!

I hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving and you blow out all "2" of your birthday candles! Birthday gift is on its way - along with treats to share with TJ & Kaylee!

So thankful you came to earth November 24th, 2008! We love you sooooooooooo much!!

Five little girls at a Play

Amy and I took Maegan, Emma, Katelyn, Kelsey & Pearl to a stake production of Savior of the World at the Bountiful Regional Center Friday night. They were adorable, three of them had their hair up in Piggie buns...so cute.....it's a girl thing! They were so excited to be there and whenever Jesus was on the stage whether as an infant or resurrected Lord, these little girls would become absolutely still and transfixed. It was obvious they know Him and love Him!

Jake's Bountiful football team won their championship game on saturday. All four Lindsey girls were there with GO BRAVES on their headbands and even though we were wearing four layers of clothes so we wouldn't freeze - we were grateful at times for big blankets to wrap up in!

Happy 1/2 year old Violet got to eat some cupcake Tuesday night! She danced on the bar, if you hold her up she jumps with her feet and loves the feeling of bouncing up and down!~~she smiled and posed very appropriately for a birthday girl! Pearl is definitely the big sister and loves her little roommate very much!

Now Michael and Britney are the only November babies - so their birthdays are coming up! Michael 2 and Britney 10 - pretty exciting!!

Other exciting news - Britney's soccer team continues to beat soundly other teams!!! The indoor arena is wonderful now that winter has hit! Jake's football team plays for the championship this Saturday - Brooke was chosen to represent her school as a member of student counsel, quite an honor for a fifth grader! - she just spent a whole day at BYU with John Bytheway and other leaders teaching them~

All of my grandchildren bring such joy to their families ~ We love you soooooooo much!

Keep choosing good friends, read lots of good books and give those parents a hug once a day!!!

Halloween was a fun and spooky night at the Lindsey's!! We had ghosts, witches, cats and the "MOON", goblins, dead soccer players, clowns, lady bugs, fairies and Peter Pan even flew by! ~ Delicious soups, cornbread & honey butter, Lindsey cantaloupe and lots of chocolate made it a great evening. I'm sure Jenny, Amy & Stacey got lots of "scary" pictures that will be forthcoming~~the rain didn't dampen the spirits of the trick or treaters.....Uncle Jason did the car-hop as Derek and Devin dashed from house to house to gain their stash!...........Violet's first Halloween and she loved it!! she would stare and then laugh at all the painted faces talking to her~

Now on to one of my favorite holidays~~~THANKSGIVING!
